Landenberg, PA, March 25, 2025 – Skyland USA announced today that President Joe DiNorscia is retiring, effective March 28, 2025.
DiNorscia is co-founder of Skyland USA, creators of rooflite green roof soil products, and has successfully led the company since its founding in 2005. As President, he oversaw the rapid expansion of the company from a local, Mid-Atlantic supplier of green roof media to an international company that now supplies green roof media to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Australia.
During DiNorscia’s tenure, the company had many important milestones that will set it up for continued growth as he retires. A few key milestones include:
- The creation of rooflite Soil Systems, which provide a complete soil solution for any type of green roof installation
- The three-part rooflite Planter Soil System, designed for the unique and demanding environment of a planter
- The creation of rooflite agricultural, designed to grow crops on a rooftop
- Implementation of a nationwide blender network that produces and ships rooflite products to every corner of the United States
- Addition of international blenders in Canada, Mexico, Chile and Australia, allowing rooflite products to be used globally
- Projects in every region of the US – from the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and South to the Midwest, West Coast, and Pacific Northwest
As of 2025, the company has installed over 30 million square feet of its green roof soil products.
For DiNorscia, the success of the company has been a collaborative effort. “I’ve certainly played an important role in growing Skyland, but we’ve had so many people who helped us along the way,” said DiNorscia. “Our staff first and foremost. We’ve always had dedicated, creative, and smart staff that helped us go from a business idea we thought could work to a successful and growing national and international company. I also have to recognize our green roof partners, including landscape architects, designers, and installers, who have pushed us to keep getting better by improving and developing our green roof soil products.”
In 2024, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. This award reflects DiNorscia’s critical role in helping the green roof industry grow in North American cities and beyond. The award is a testament to his dedication in helping landscape architects and green roof designers make our cities and urban areas more green, more welcoming, more resilient to climate change, and healthier for residents and visitors. It’s a well-deserved recognition of a long, successful career that has truly changed the world for the better.
Prior to his 20-year role as President at Skyland USA, DiNorscia had a successful career in the composting, soil, and mushroom farming industries. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors and as the Treasurer of the U.S Composting Council. He also served on the Board of Directors for Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. Between 1987-2000, he served on the Board of Directors and as President of the American Mushroom Institute.
DiNorscia now joins his Skyland USA founding partner, Peter Philippi, in retirement. Philippi retired from Skyland USA in 2020, after a successful, long-time career in the green roof industry. Philippi was an integral part in developing the technical solutions and product formulations that allowed rooflite to create successful, long-lasting green roof soil products. DiNorscia is immensely grateful to Philippi for helping him build Skyland USA, a company that is sure to be around for many years to come.
As DiNorscia winds down his time at Skyland USA, he is ready for retirement. “I’m gratified to have started and grown this business over the past 20 years. It’s been so exciting to see the green roof industry start as this small, niche market to the vast and growing industry it is today. It will be an adjustment to no longer be involved in the day-to-day work, but I look forward to having more time for my family and other interests.”
Jason Brown, current Director of Sales, will be promoted to Director of Skyland and will take over leadership of Skyland USA.
