Landenberg, PA, March 11, 2026 – Skyland USA announced today that its rooflite green roof media products were featured on a recent episode of the Magnolia Network’s TV Show, Building Outside the Lines.
Building Outside the Lines is a show that follows Jared “Cappie” Capp and his daughter Alex Headley as they take on unique building projects at their property in Spearfish, SD and the property of clients, family and friends in different locations. Their Spearfish, SD property includes their Shortgrass Resort, a private, 52-acre resort. The resort is a child-free, all-inclusive experience, featuring Meander, a farm-to-fork restaurant onsite.

Season 3 of the show premiered on December 31, 2025. On episode 8 of season 3, which aired on February 10, 2026, Cappie and Alex create a natural pool oasis at Shortgrass Resort and put a living roof on the resort’s restaurant next door. rooflite green roof media was used to create the living roof.
The living roof was part of a larger plan for blending the new pool and the restaurant building into the landscape on the resort property. The extensive green roof was planted with flowering sedum, providing a low maintenance way to make a beautiful, green space on the empty roof.
As Cappie explains in the episode, the right, engineered soil is critical to the success of the restaurant living roof project: “We start by laying down a thick protection fabric and then cover it with a special planting media. It’s a lot of bags designed specifically for this kind of job. So the reason we do that instead of our normal soil is the weight. This roof has been engineered for this living roof, and we know how many pounds per square foot we’re allowed to have. That’s why we bring in engineered soils for that.”
For rooflite, the TV show represents a special opportunity to share its products with a new audience. “The green roof industry is thriving across the United States, but a lot of people who don’t work in the industry are not familiar with the concept of a green roof,” said Jason Brown, Director of Skyland USA. “We were so excited to be featured on this episode of Building Outside the Lines because we could share the idea of green roofs and how our high-quality green roof soil is used with people who may not be familiar with us.”
The rooflite green roof media used in the episode was provided by Colorado Materials, a licensed rooflite blender located in Longmont, CO. Colorado Materials has been a rooflite blender since 2013.
Colorado Materials produced two types of green roof media for this project:
- 48 cubic yards of rooflite extensive, a growth medium for extensive green roofs with optimal features for hardy and drought tolerant vegetation, including sedum.
- 36 cubic yards of rooflite drain, a granular lightweight aggregate that creates a sustainable root environment by retaining and draining water in a natural way.
The rooflite media products were shipped 376 miles from Longmont, CO to Spearfish, SD in more than 40 super sacks via flatbed trucks. The soil was then installed on the roof to create the beautiful sedum green roof.
Skyland USA celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025, and this experience is another important milestone in the company’s history. “It was so exciting to see our rooflite products on TV,” Brown said. “What a fun way to make our TV debut. We truly appreciate Cappie reaching out to Colorado Materials and rooflite to include us in the living roof project.”
