Women’s Tower Rooftop Garden at Wilmington Hospital was part of multi-million dollar hospital expansion. It was made possible by a $1 million donation from the hospital’s Junior Board, a non-profit which supports the mission of ChristianaCare through financial and volunteer support.
The rooftop garden features outdoor seating, walkways, and plants for all seasons. It was designed to offer visitors, patients, and hospital employees a place to relax and recuperate. The space not only provides a haven within the hospital complex, it’s also a multi-functional space for patients.
Patients at the Center for Women’s & Children’s Health can visit with children in strollers or more active children who can run and play in the garden. The pathways are lined with benches, and private seating areas are available in various corners. The garden includes a variety of plants, including azaleas, rhododendrons, trees, and shrubs. It’s a truly relaxing space for patients and visitors alike.
For this unique green roof space, a soil system build-up for deep planters was perfect. Deep planters have a total depth of more than 18 inches and have a potential depth of up to several feet. This system has an additional soil layer, rooflite intensive base, between the intensive top layer and the drainage layer, which provides better aeration and increased structural stability.
